The Obama Campaign Is Now Using Mobile Payments Device Square For Fundraising

I came across this article on Techcrunch and I found it quite interesting.

The latest technology to be adopted by the Obama campaign—Square. The mobile payments device is now being used by the Obama for fundraising, says the company. Staff, fundraisers and others are being equipped with the card reading devices, says Square, enabling the campaign to take donations on the go via Android devices, iPhones or iPads.

“Whether you’re a Republican or a Democrat, running for president or local assembly, Square makes it easier than ever for candidates, organizations and volunteers to fundraise for their cause,” said a spokesperson for Square.

There’s no doubt that using a mobile payments device from Square makes fundraising much easier. With traditional forms of fundraising, if you want to donate money at a fundraising event, you often have to fill out a form and hand over a check or cash at the event. If you don’t have your checkbook or cash handy (which, many of us don’t), credit cards are the only option. You can write down your credit card number and info for fundraisers to charge at a later date, but you have to trust that the fundraiser keeps track of that information and paper.

With Square, there is both a convenience added for both the payee and fundraiser. The donation is instantly processed, and Square will send the receipt via SMS or email to the payee. Of course, political contributions and donations are a little more complicated because of the reporting requirements associated with donations. We’re told the same processing fees (2.75 percent) apply for use by non-profits and political campaigns.   Read More....

I wonder when it would happen in Nigeria, or indeed Africa. What about Mpesa In Kenya, MTN money all over Africa, Paga  or Pocketmoni in Nigeria? Or will the big politicians ever need to raise funds from the common man through this means?

World Bank 2012 Social Accountability Grant Competition – Call for Proposals

Social Development Civil Society Fund Africa
Managed by the World Bank, the Social Development Civil Society Fund (CSF) has directly funded civil society organizations (CSO) since 1983 by awarding grants to projects encouraging the civic engagement of marginalized and vulnerable groups. This year, the CSF is focusing on the theme ofSocial Accountability. Social accountability refers to the engagement of citizens and civil society organizations (CSOs) with policy makers and service providers to ensure that public officials account or take responsibility for their actions and public institutions are more responsive to citizens’ needs. The CSF will award 10 to 20 grants to CSOs in participating countries for projects working on such social accountability initiatives.

Why is Social Accountability important?Traditional accountability systems include political checks and balances, such as national and local elections, administrative rules, and legal procedures. Social accountability activities aim to complement and reinforce these existing systems, by creating continuous, structured and increased dialogue between citizens, CSOs and public officials. Social accountability activities create new ways for citizens to voice their opinions on the governance of public institutions, and allow them to participate more regularly in decision-making. As a result, the performance of public institutions in fulfilling their mandate to the public can be improved.

Objective of the Grant Competition
To promote CSOs to use social accountability measures in order to 1) facilitate constructive CSO engagement with governments and other stakeholders, 2) improve transparency, accountability and participation in priority sectors and services.

Participating Countries
Democratic Republic of Congo, Guinea, Kenya, Nigeria, South Sudan, Zambia.

Court orders Airtel Nigeria to return Econet's 5% shares

The long drawn battle between Airtel Nigeria and Econet Wireless Limited (EWL) assumed a new dimension on Monday as a Federal High Court in Lagos ruled that the Indian firm should reinstate EWL’s five percent shares in the company.

The matter however stems from a shareholder dispute in nine years ago. In 2003 Econet Wireless Limited, attempted to resist a takeover bid by Vodacom, of Econet Wireless Nigeria (EWN) in which it owned a 5 percent stake.

The sale to Vodacom however went through, but Vodacom pulled out, citing irregularities in the takeover process.

Nigeria (HospitalManager) wins first prize in the 2011 Apps4Africa Climate Challenge for West and Central Africa regions

Last year, we reported that there was an Apps4Africa Climate Competition for software developers in Africa to create applications for mobile phones and computers to help communities cope with the impact of climate change.  A brainstorming session for the competition was held at the Co-Creation Hub (CcHub to help climate change experts interact with technologists to think up creative tools and ideas to build for the competition . The competition encompasses three regions of Africa, and the first two regions — East Africa and West and Central Africa — competed late last year. The results of the Southern Africa competition, which lasts through March 21, will be announced in April.

In the news release obtained from the US State department website, Nigeria won first prize in the West and Central Africa regional competition.

According to AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science) Science & Technology Fellow Jeffrey Fox, who coordinated the Apps4Africa Climate Challenge for the State Department, the first two regional competitions had a combined total of nearly 200 entries.

The State Department and Appfrica International, the software development company that ran the contests from its offices in Uganda and the United States, screened the entries to make sure they addressed climate change adaptation, and then sent the relevant submissions to five independent judges. The winning applications were chosen based on their technical ingenuity and their ability to have a measurable impact on climate change adaptation.

The first prize went to HospitalManager, a Web-based application from Nigeria that will help hospitals plan for increased patient loads following extreme weather events such as storms, floods and heat waves. Hospitals can identify patterns in patient visits during weather emergencies and use real-time climate forecasts to prepare for such situations and save more lives.

Second place went to the Eco-fund Forum, a Web-based app from Senegal that helps communities share successful strategies for adapting to local impacts of climate change. The third-prize winner was Farmerline, a mobile and Web-based app that will help farmers in rural Ghana obtain information they need to increase yields in the face of changes in the growing season and climate variability.

The top three winners in each region received cash prizes, and private partners are contributing follow-on support.

NaijaCyberHactivists hack Labour Congress, Police Force and Central Bank websites in 1 day

In an apparent show of its cyber prowess, NaijaCyberHactivists hacked Nigerian Labour Congress, Nigerian Police Force and Central Bank of Nigeria websites in 1 day. Earlier in the month as reported, they also hacked into the EFCC website too.

They said it and they did it. Their mission is to attack all government's infrastructures till oppression of the looting class STOPS!

As much as I am aware of their position and their method of protest, I hope it does not turn from protest to something else.  It is obvious that these people are sophisticated to hack into "any" website. What happens when they turn their targets from government bodies to private banks and card companies. I must warn that these institutions must beef up their online security to avoid such intrusions as this might cause chaos in the financial systems in Nigeria.

Hmmm..... I wonder how much was budgetted for online security in the Security sector budget of N922 billion in the 2012 bugdet presented late last year.

Note: As at the time of this report, the Nigerian Police Force website is back up while the Nigerin Labour Congress and Central bank of Nigeria websites are still down

Google Trader wears new look on mobile phones

Yesterday, Google launched a new look for the web version of Google Trader. It remarked on the importance of mobile phones in the African market. It claimed it had reorganized its mobile site to reduce clutter and emphasize the most important information. This will be available in these four markets - Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda and Kenya.

This information was released in a blog posted on the Google Africa website.

Though innovative, it is not the first to do this as one of its competitors, notably Dealfish, already has its web version and even an Android app too....test here.

One must acknowledge that the players in this industry are changing the concept of the local marketplace and making the marketplace available across any platform.

Nigeria comes 3rd after South Africa and Kenya in a research that shows how Africa Tweets

In the first ever attempt to comprehensively map the use of Twitter in Africa, Nigeria ranks 3rd behind Kenya and South Africa by volume in tweets. This research was conducted recently by Portland and Tweetminster when they analysed over 11.5 million geo-located Tweets originating on the continent during the last three months of 2011. This pan-African analysis of Twitter traffic was complemented by a survey of 500 of Africa’s most active Tweeters.

Some of the other notable findings are listed below.
  • South Africa is the continent’s most active country by volume of geo-located Tweets, with over twice as many Tweets (5,030,226 during Q4 2011) as the next most active Kenya (2,476,800). Nigeria (1,646,212), Egypt (1,214,062) and Morocco (745,620) make up the remainder of the top five most active countries.
  • 57% of Tweets from Africa are sent from mobile devices.
  • 60% of Africa’s most active Tweeters are aged 20-29.
  • Twitter in Africa is widely used for social conversation, with 81% of those polled saying that they mainly used it for communicating with friends.
  • Twitter is becoming an important source of information in Africa. 68% of those polled said that they use Twitter to monitor news. 22% use it to search for employment opportunities.
  • African Twitter users are active across a range of social media, including Facebook, YouTube, Google+ and LinkedIn.
The information was presented in a release on Portland's website this morning and more information can be found in a presentation here.

DStv introduces the Walka into the Nigerian market

African PayTV operator, DStv last week introduced the Walka into the Nigerian market, a DVB-H handheld TV device which will enable DSTV subscribers to watch television on the move.

Speaking during the launch of the product in Lagos, General Manager of Digital Mobile Television (Nigeria) (DMTV) Limited, Mayo Okunola said the Walka follows a long line of technology innovations associated with the DSTV brand - including the Drifta, DSTV Mobile (access to DSTV channels via mobile phone), High Definition PVR decoders and integrated customer service tools.

With the new device, sold for N17, 500, subscribers within DStv mobile network coverage areas in 10 cities presently, will have access to 15 channels on DStv Mobile DVB-H network.

Subscribers of Walka mobile device don’t necessarily need to be existing DStv subscribers, and after purchase the device needs to be activated by contacting MultiChoice call centre.

“Existing DStv subscribers who are currently on premium bouquet will enjoy the service free of charge after purchasing the device,” Okunola said. But subscribers with packages lower than the DStv premium or non-DStv subscribers can choose either a Mini package of 11 channels for N680 per month or Maxi package of 14 channels for N1,680 per month.

According to him, with the new Walka device, subscribers within DSTV Mobile network coverage areas in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kaduna, Ibadan, Enugu, Benin, Onitsha, Aba and Asaba will now have access to the channels on the DSTV Mobile DVB-H network.

DStv is a member of Naspers group, the fifth largest media group in the world.

Blackberry hits 2.4 million in Nigeria even as news of RIM's CEOs resignation rules the airwaves

Even with the news from Blackberry creator Research In Motion Inc, that Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis
were stepping down as the co-chief executives and chairmen of the Company, effective Jan 23rd, news coming from Nigeria states that the number of blackberry devices has hit 2.4 million.

The Canada based Company had suffered quite a few setbacks last year with Apple’s popular iPhone and other smart devices as also Google’s Android based devices overshadowed ‘’the very Business-friendly and email-centric’ Blackberry. It all started with the BlackBerry PlayBook and the cold response it received in the mid of 2011. Also in October 2011,  the Blackberry users across the globe faced service outages and even threatened to move on to different phone types and in December the Company delayed the launch of its next-generation BlackBerry 10 devices by several months.

However the news in Nigeria is different. The report from a Nigerian business news publication, Business Day recently revealed that there are about 2.4 million blackberry users in Nigeria. This is a 140% increase from the 1 million user number reported by industry analysts last year.

Innovation in Agriculture - New Yam seed production technique in Nigeria excites Nigerian farmers

A healthy seed yam producing technique developed by scientists at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), that promises better harvests in the season ahead, is exciting farmers in Nigeria, according to a statement from the Nigeria-based research institute.

“Some farmers planting 200 seed yams before now have enough to plant 500 heaps. Also the quality of the seed yams is very good and farmers love the technology,” the statement quoted a state extensionist who is partnering with IITA scientists on the project, Mr. Moses Oguniyi, as saying.

The healthy seed yam producing technique involves cutting tubers of yam into small sizes of between 50 and 100 grams, and treating them with appropriate pesticides and insecticides before planting.

“The harvest is so bountiful that my wife and I are in awe. We now have enough seed yams to plant next season,” a farmer, Mr. Abiodun Fatoki, was quoted as saying.

West Africa accounts for more than 90 per cent of yam production in the world.

Exclusive: YouTube hits 4 billion daily video views

(Reuters) - YouTube, Google Inc's video website, is streaming 4 billion online videos every day, a 25 percent increase in the past eight months, according to the company.

The jump in video views comes as Google pushes YouTube beyond the personal computer, with versions of the site that work on smartphones and televisions, and as the company steps up efforts to offer more professional-grade content on the site.

According to the company, roughly 60 hours of video is now uploaded to YouTube every minute, compared with the 48 hours of video uploaded per minute in May.

YouTube, which Google acquired for $1.65 billion in 2006, represents one of Google's key opportunities to generate new sources of revenue outside its traditional Internet search advertising business.

Nigerian Govt agencies to migrate to .ng domain

As part of measures by the government to bring all IT-based activities of its agencies and parastatals to a single platform, the federal government said it is set to ensure full migration by all its ministries, departments and agencies from their existing domain names to Nigeria’s Code Top Level domain name, .ng, both for their websites and official emails.

The Minister of Communications Technology, Mrs. Omobola Johnson, who made this known in a recent event in Lagos said the decision was part of the current measures by the government to bring all IT-based activities of the MDAs to a single platform thereby engendering a connected government that allows for sharing of facilities and information among government’s parastatals.

According to the minister, the ministry would use the medium to acomplisg the dream of achieving true e-government in the country.

“Another thing we are looking at is Information and Communications Technology in government. I can’t stand here and preach to you about the importance of IT development in the industry without telling you about what we are doing in government about using ICT as a means of transparently administering governance and engaging the citizenry,” she said.

Shine a Light: The Suitcase That's Saving Women's Lives

In the fight against maternal mortality in the developing world, a rugged, portable “Solar Suitcase” is providing reliable electricity to clinics in 17 countries where healthcare workers previously struggled to provide emergency obstetric care by the light of candles, flashlights and mobile phones. The Solar Suitcase powers medical LED lights, headlamps, mobile phones, computers and medical devices.

In Kaduna State, located in the Northern part of Nigeria, four Solar electric systems have been installed at Kofan Gayan State Hospital. Individual solar suitcases were deployed in multiple Nigerian maternity clinics including Baban Dodo, Tutan Wada Clinic, Pampaida Clinics (part of the Millenial Village Project), and Okpuno clinic. They are also being used to power laptop computer for electronic medical records, and to aid Population Council researchers studying maternal health care in rural villages. In 2011, Installation of solar suitcases has begun in Kano and Kaduna States in partnership with the Ministry of Health. The plan is to  install 36 systems over the next few months.

Wikipedia plans blackout to protest SOPA

Wikipedia plans a blackout to protest SOPA. The blackout is scheduled to occur Wednesday and last for 24 hours to protest against the Stop Online Piracy Act. The blackout is from (0500 GMT).

"If passed, this legislation will harm the free and open Internet and bring about new tools for censorship of international websites inside the United States," the Wikimedia foundation said.

The Stop Online Piracy Act in the U.S. House of Representatives and the Protect Intellectual Property Act under consideration in the Senate are designed to crack down on sales of pirated U.S. products overseas.

Supporters include the film and music industry, which often sees its products sold illegally. They say the legislation is needed to protect intellectual property and jobs.

Critics say the legislation could hurt the technology industry and infringe on free-speech rights. Among their concerns are provisions that would weaken cyber-security for companies and hinder domain access rights.

The most controversial provision is in the House bill, which would have enabled federal authorities to "blacklist" sites that are alleged to distribute pirated content. That would essentially cut off portions of the Internet to all U.S. users. But congressional leaders appear to be backing off this provision. Tech companies such as Google, Facebook, Yahoo, Twitter, and others have spoken out against the legislation and said it threatens the industry's livelihood. Several online communities such as Reddit, Boing Boing and others have announced plans to go dark in protest as well.

--end--

SOPA

The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), also known as House Bill 3261 or H.R. 3261, is a bill that was introduced in the United States House of Representatives on October 26, 2011, by House Judiciary Committee Chair Representative Lamar Smith (R-TX) and a bipartisan group of 12 initial co-sponsors. The bill, if made law, would expand the ability of U.S. law enforcement and copyright holders to fight online trafficking in copyrighted intellectual property and counterfeit goods.[2] Presented to the House Judiciary Committee, it builds on the similar PRO-IP Act of 2008 and the corresponding Senate bill, the PROTECT IP Act.

EFCC site hacked - Top Oil company Directors detained by EFCC

The EFCC site after the hacking incident

I didn't know about the announcement that the EFCC was going to be hacked yesterday. So when I got an email on my personal email (an alert) that "The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested the Managing Director of CONOIL and Globacom's boss, Mike Adenuga; Managing Director of African Petroleum, Femi Otedola; Managing Director of MRS, Sayyu Dantata and others including officials of the PPPRA ........" , I thought it was true or wanted it to be true. I sent word on my bb message but it turned out to be false. Some group had hacked into the EFCC website.

No group has claimed responsibility. But I heard that NaijaCyberHactivists, a prominent hacking group against the fuel subsidy removal movement stated that it would assault the EFCC website at exactly 10.00a.m on Friday, 13 January 2011 if the EFCC did not do anything to prosecute the cabals involved in the fuel subsidy removal.

Google tenders an unreserved apology to Mocality Kenya

In a response to Mocality's claim and results of a sting operation that Google improperly used Mocality’s data and misrepresented our relationship with Mocality to encourage customers to create new websites, Nelson Mattos, the Vice President of Engineering (EMEA) tendered an unreserved apology some hours after Stefan Magdalinski broke the news on Mocality kenya's blog post.

Hear Nelson Mattos in the recent post on Google+.....

"We were mortified to learn that a team of people working on a Google project improperly used Mocality’s data and misrepresented our relationship with Mocality to encourage customers to create new websites. We’ve already unreservedly apologised to Mocality. We’re still investigating exactly how this happened, and as soon as we have all the facts, we’ll be taking the appropriate action with the people involved."

This shows that Google really made a boo-boo this time and I guess they underestimated the technical capabilities of the so-called African company "Mocality". I am sure whoever was responsible did not think Mocality was capable of carrying out the sting operation since they were caught twice.

Mocality Kenya's sting operation catches Google Kenya red-handed

A sting operation conducted by Mocality Kenya has just shown that Google Kenya has been illegally, systematically accessing Mocality's database and attempting to sell their competing product (Getting Kenya's Businesses Online - GKBO) to Mocality's Business Owners. Also Google has been telling untruths about their relationship with Mocality, and about Mocality's business practices, to do so.

This sting report was released by Stefan Magdalinski, GM Mocality in a Mocality blog post released this morning.

The report includes some revealing reports, transcripts, calls that Google will have to answer to.

Some of the questions that come to mind (by Stefan) are:
  • If Google wanted to work with our data, why didn’t they just ask?  In discussions with various Google Kenya/Africa folks in the past, I’d raised the idea of working together more closely in Kenya. Getting Kenyan businesses online is precisely what we do.
  • Who authorised this?  Until we uncovered the ‘India by way of Mountain View’ angle, I could have believed that this was a local team that somehow forgot the corporate motto, but not now.
  • Who knew, and who SHOULD have known, even if they didn’t know?
Is this true? What will Google's response be? What will be the legal repercussions? This would certainly be a big blow to Google's corporate image.....

For more on the sting, please read on.

MWEB chief quits....After 15 years to pursue other interests

MWEB's group CEO Rudi Jansen has resigned after 15 years at the firm to explore new business interests.

MWEB, a subsidiary of Naspers, said DStv Mobile CEO Francois Theron will fill the post.

Theron has served as CEO for MultiChoice Middle East and Egypt, M-Tel and the United Broadcasting Corporation in Thailand, which he turned into a profitable venture. He also served on the main board of the Asian Cable and Satellite Association.

Jansen said: "The MWEB business is in great shape and while there are still many challenges ahead in the local ISP industry, I know that Francois’ experience locally and internationally will bring immense value to the business. It is time for me to move on to new challenges.”

Jansen was one of MWEB’s first employees, joining the company as head of finance in 1997 before rising to CEO in 2005.

During this time, Jansen has led MWEB to become one of South Africa’s biggest ISPs. In 2010, MyBroadband named him Broadband Maverick of the Year for launching uncapped ADSL and pushing for free and open peering.

Eben Greyling, the CEO of Pay-TV Platforms at Naspers, said: “Rudi has been instrumental in MWEB’s growth, relentlessly pursuing a vision for the company as the champion of a free web."

MWEB came into Nigeria in 2003 but later became iWayAfrica Nigeria Limited (a member of Telkom S.A.) in 2007.

MTN to spend $1bn on Nigeria network

Africa’s largest telecoms firm, plans to spend more than $1bn this year on its Nigerian network, an official said on Thursday, as it looks to meet regulatory demands to improve service.

A spokesperson for MTN Nigeria, Akinwale Goodluck, told Reuters in an email the company had invested $1bn on network infrastructure in 2011 and was planning to spend more in 2012.

MTN, whose biggest market is Nigeria, was reprimanded last year by the Nigerian Communications Commission for failing to meet quality of service requirements.

MTN has said it must meet regulatory targets for improved service in Nigeria or face financial penalties.

The company has more than 40 million subscribers in Nigeria.

The protest is no longer analogue but digital too…….

I watched a recent documentary on Obama and how he won his election into the White House and it was remarked that while Hilary Clinton’s campaign was analogue, President’s Obama’s campaign was digital. There was a clear difference between their communication campaigns and this helped President Obama in winning the elections. This difference was also re-echoed when Sam Graham-Felsen (at the May edition of “The platform” organized by Covenant Christian Centre in Nigeria) discussed his record-breaking blueprint on “How we did it: The story of President Barack Obama’s Online Strategy”. Sam was blog director of the presidential campaign of Barack Obama in 2008. As the blog director of the New Media Committee, he wrote for and oversaw BarackObama.com/blog, worked with key national and state bloggers to promote the campaign’s message, helped direct the campaign’s online rapid response operation, and produced and collaborated on dozens of online videos for the campaign.

I also recall an earlier blog on the use of Social Media and Social Reformation/Revolution where I referred to Wael Ghonim, the Google Head of Marketing, Middle East/North Africa and cyberactivist who used Facebook to organize a revolution. (see “The Facebook Freedom Fighter” by Mike Giglio).

NaijaCyberHactivists co-ordinate provision of prominent Nigerians' phone numbers

After hacking the Federal Ministry of Transport's website, NaijaCyberHactivists co-ordinate the provision of phone numbers of prominent Nigerians so that their phones would be bombarded with sms texts and phone calls.
The group had vowed to disturb prominent Nigerians by bombarding their phones with sms text messages till they get the message. And they have actually succeeded in getting the phone numbers. Some of the prominent Nigerians that have been targetted include David Mark, Diezani Allison Maduekwe, Rotimi Amaechi, General Azazi, e.t.c The phone numbers are being circulated via  BBM, Twitter, Facebook and many others.
The instruction is to "occupy their phone lines until they bow to the demands of the people".

You too can borrow money from Airtel Nigeria - Introducing Airtel talk Time Advance

I heard some youths talking about “borrowing” money from Airtel. Surprised, I moved closer to see if they had found a crooked way of getting credit without paying for it. They said “No” and that it was legitimate and a friend of theirs introduced it to them 3 days ago and that it worked.
Well I said if it was true, that would really be magnanimous of Airtel. I then browsed the Airtel Nigeria website to find out if such a service existed and I found it – Airtel Talk Time Advance. I think this is truly a first and quite interesting that Nigerians would be trusted with such a product.

Airtel Talk Time Advance service is a service that enables customers to request for advance airtime (credit) without physically recharging their airtime balance. The customer is required to send a request through a zero-rated code *500# which will provide all the denomination of airtime available to lend.

The Nigerian Federal Ministry of Transportation website hacked by CyberHactivitists

In a bid to #OccupyNigeria, The Nigerian Federal Ministry of Transportation website has been hacked by CyberHactivitists.

The group claims it is doing this in reaction to the recent fuel subsidy removal by the Federal Government led by President Goodluck Jonathan.

See the current image on the site.

Interestingly, this poses an important security issue apparent in the administration of online infrastructure in Nigeria.

It was learnt that the group attacked two Nigerian government websites (NDDC) and (NAPEP) back in May 2011 in protest of the decision of the Federal Government's decision to spend N1 billion for President Goodluck Jonathan's inauguration on May 29. Also not spared in October 2011, was the website of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in the protest of Internet censorship in Nigeria.

Fuel Subsidy protest: FG denies shutting Blackberry services

ABUJA – The Federal government, on Tuesday, denied shutting down Blackberry services for two weeks, over the messages that are being exchanged on the recent deregulation of the downstream sector of the economy.

In a statement that was issued by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and signed by the Director, Public Affairs, Mr. Tony Ojobo, said the Executive Vice-Chairman Dr. Eugene Juwah didn’t at anytime had meeting with any of the Chief Executive Officer of Telecom operators in the country.

According to the statement, “The attention of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has been drawn to an information making rounds that the NCC had, at a meeting this morning agreed with CEOs of telecommunications networks to shutdown Blackberry Services in order to deny Nigerians the use of that very important social network.

“The Management hereby states categorically that there was never such a meeting held, nor was there ever a resolution to shut down Blackberry services. The Public is please advised to disregard such information.”

The Commission therefore urged the network operators to continue to provide all telecommunication services, including Blackberry Services without fail.

Further Clarifications on Cash-less Lagos Project

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has introduced a new policy on cash-based transactions which stipulates a ‘cash handling charge’ on daily cash withdrawals or cash deposits that exceed N150,000 for Individuals and N1,000,000 for Corporate bodies. The new policy on cash-based transactions (withdrawals & deposits) in banks, aims at reducing (NOT ELIMINATING) the amount of physical cash (coins and notes) circulating in the economy, and encouraging more electronic-based transactions (payments for goods, services, transfers, etc.).

Why The Cash Policy?
The new cash policy was introduced for a number of key reasons, including:

1. To drive development and modernization of our payment system in line with Nigeria's vision 2020 goal of being amongst the top 20 economies by the year 2020. An efficient and modern payment system is positively correlated with economic development, and is a key enabler for economic growth.
2. To reduce the cost of banking services (including cost of credit) and drive financial inclusion by providing more efficient transaction options and greater reach.
