Motorola vs. Siri: Android Voice Actions Faster Than iPhone's Siri?

I met Siri through a colleague of mine in the office and I was truly impressed. Though I am not an Apple fanatic, but I was bowled over by iphone's 4S Siri. For those who do not know about Siri, it is iphone's intelligent and sassy voice assistant. As with any technology innovation from Apple, the android based device manufacturers will come up with a competing product within a couple of weeks. There has been many unsuccessful clones but the Motorola has come out with its own voice assistant. They have even challenged Siri and come out recently with some YouTube commercials to show that its voice assistant is better.

Check it out. What do you think? For one, I think that since the basic technology is available to everyone, the lead time for new technology features is not often long.

Motorola just released 3 videos, on its YouTube Channel, pitching the Atrix 2, Photon 4G and Motorola Electrify against the iphone Siri.

1. Atrix 2 versus Siri ....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBYMDs_RFeI
2. Photon 4G versus Siri......http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bihgxpAQyXU
3. Motorola Electrify versus Siri.....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6QySOKzFQk
In this videos, it is apparent that Motorola is not too impressed by Siri's speed. Siri loses to all three Motorola phones.

From GSMA World Congress 2012: Nokia unveils cheaper Windows smartphone (Lumia 610)

Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia unveiled a cheaper smartphone using Microsoft's Windows Phone software on Monday, aiming to win back market share by targeting a wider audience.

Nokia last year dumped its own smartphone software in favor of Windows Phone to step up its fight against rivals such as Apple's iPhone, but the high prices of its phones have been a major weak point.

Nokia said its new Lumia 610 model would carry a price tag of 189 euros ($250), excluding subsidies and taxes, when it goes on sale next quarter. That compares with around $600 for the iPhone and other high-end smartphones.

"The 610 takes Nokia's Lumia portfolio to an encouraging new price point in its pursuit of cheaper Android rivals," said Ben Wood, head of research at CCS Insight.

Investors, however, were unconvinced the new model and pricing would do the trick, and Nokia shares were down 7.0 percent to 4.02 euros by 1237 GMT.

Analysts noted that Asian handset makers such as Huawei and ZTE were coming out with even cheaper smartphones for closer to $100.

"I had hoped for a slightly lower price range. Maybe the markets were a bit disappointed with the price, which was quite high," Inderes analyst Mikael Rautanen said, adding the shares had spiked on Friday in anticipation of the event.

LACKING UNIQUENESS

Nokia also announced a global version of its high-end Lumia 900 phone and unveiled a new top-of-the range cameraphone 808, which comes with a 41 megapixel camera sensor, as well as three more basic models.

The move comes over a year after Chief Executive Stephen Elop compared Nokia to a "man standing on a burning oil platform" and teamed up with Microsoft to take on Apple and Google's Android phones.

Wall Street and industry analysts say that although the latest Windows phones could be worthy competitors to Apple's iPhone and top-of-the-range Android handsets, the devices lack unique qualities to make their sales take off.

Microsoft's share of the smartphone market fell to just 2 percent last quarter, from 3 percent a year ago and 13 percent four years earlier, according to Strategy Analytics.

In addition to its struggle in high-end smartphones, Nokia also faces an increasing threat from Asian manufacturers.

Analysts say both Huawei and ZTE are set to grab more market share globally in 2012, as they shift their focus from basic phones to smartphones.

Huawei and ZTE are now selling smartphones running on Google's Android operating system, attracted to the higher margins the market provides.

From GSMA World Congress 2012: Vodafone and Visa in mobile payment partnership

Vodafone and Visa have announced a worldwide partnership that will enable consumers to pay for goods and services using their mobile phones based on near-field communication (NFC technology). The two companies will develop a Vodafone-branded service supported by Visa’s payment system. They say the link-up is “the world’s largest mobile payments partnership”.

The mobile wallet service, which will be offered across the operator’s footprint (398-million customers in more than 30 countries across 5 continents), will be based on Visa’s pre-paid account and offered to consumers in partnership with the card company’s issuers.

Initial launch of the service will be in Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Turkey and the US in the current financial year. Service will roll out in financial year starting in April 2012. Other countries within the mobile operator’s footprint will follow over time.

Other financial institutions as well as retailers, transport and utility companies are welcome to offer their services within Vodafone’s wallet.

In developed markets in Europe, North American and Australia, users of the new service will be able to make purchases using NFC-enabled smartphones equipped with Visa payWave mobile payment technology.

From GSMA World Congress: Samsung hits new note with tablet launch

Korean equipment manufacturer Samsung unveiled the second device in its Note line-up at Congress this week, and also made it clear that it views the “Note” range as a new category that is not dependent on the form factor.

The Android 4.0-based Galaxy Note 10.1 is a tablet-sized follow-up to the 5.3-inch device that was launched last year and also comes with the S-pen technology that allows the user to draw pictures and images on the screen.

According to Juha Park, senior vice president in the Samsung global product management group, Note “is a product category that links the phone and the tablet”.

“We created a new category…that is based on usage and not the form factor,” Park told Mobile World Daily. “I believe other vendors will follow our lead.”

Indeed, Samsung is keen to increasingly show itself as a leader in the mobile networks and devices market, and not just a follower of others. Park added that the company expects to sell more than double the number of smart devices this year compared to last year, when it sold 97 million smartphones and between 6 million and 7 million tablets.

Park said sales of the first Galaxy Note have so far reached 2 million globally, and the target is to reach sales of 10 million this year.

Also at MWC, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Beam, a projector smartphone that allows users to display and share photos, videos and other content stored in the device onto any flat surfaces.

Editor's Note: Here they come again with another gadget. I have given up. I am with the Samsung Galaxy S. It is still functional and I can't trade it in for a newer gadget in Nigeria. So what do I do? Anyways, I am still happy with the Galaxy S except for its annoying short battery life.

Slow Internet access experience in East Africa due to underwater fibre-optic cable damage

I arrived at my East African Office in Nairobi this morning and noticed the unusual slow internet access and when I asked why, I was told that a ship's anchor damaged an underwater fibre-optic cable. The offending ship was waiting to enter the port of Mombasa at the weekend when it halted in a restricted area.

The knock-on effect is a predicted 20% slowdown in internet speeds in Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Ethiopia and South Sudan, the BBC reported.

The damaged cable, owned by The East African Marine Systems (Teams) – in which the Kenyan government has a share – is one of three serving east Africa. It could take up to three weeks to repair.

Joel Tanui, general manager of Teams, said: "We wish to notify all our stakeholders of ongoing emergency repair works and apologise unreservedly for any inconvenience this may cause. The cable should be fully operational within the next three weeks."

Teams will send remote-controlled submarines to assess the damage and raise the cables to the ocean surface, where specialist engineers will carry out repairs.

The cable links the region to the United Arab Emirates. Internet service providers and mobile phone operators have rerouted to a 10,625-mile cable provided by Seacom, which since 2009 has linked east Africa to Europe, India and South Africa, putting pressure on its bandwidth capacity.

I hope this is resolved as soon as possible; at least for the numerous startup companies and growing band of Facebook and Twitter users in East Africa..

10 fun facts about SMS as we celebrate 20 years of texting

This year, 2012, marks the twentieth anniversary of texting, and unlike practically every other technology, it’s hardly changed at all in two decades. To celebrate its astonishing impact upon the world, Nokia Connects has unearthed 10 astounding facts about the humble SMS.

1. The father of SMS is Matti Makkonen, a Finnish engineer. He came up with the idea of a Message Handling Service for GSM digital mobile phones in 1984 in a pizzeria in Copenhagen, during a conference on the future of mobile communications. Unfortunately, he never received a penny for his pioneering work, because he didn’t apply for a patent.

2. The format of 160 characters was determined a year later by a communications researcher,Friedham Hillebrand. While trying to standardize the technology that would allow cellphones to transmit and display messages, he discovered that the average sentence or question needed just 160 characters.

3. The first SMS ever sent was in 1992 by Brit Neil Papworth who texted ‘Happy Christmas’ to Vodafone director Richard Jarvis at a staff Christmas party. Papworth sent the Short Messaging Service from his work computer to an Orbitel 901 handset.

4. Today, text messaging is the most widely used mobile data service, with 74% of all mobile phone users worldwide, or 2.4 billion out of 3.3 billion phone subscribers communicating via text message.

5. In 2010, we sent an astonishing 6.1 trillion text messages or 192 000 per second! Our obsession earns the telecoms industry $114.6 billion a year.

6. Research has shown that driving while texting is twice as dangerous as drunk driving. One example of distraction behind the wheel is the 2008 Chatsworth train collision, which killed 25 passengers. Upon investigation, it was discovered that the train driver had sent 45 text messages prior to the crash.

7. Texting has also created a new lingo, which aims to shorten the number of characters used, such as BRB, LOL G8t. There is a popular view among linguistic researchers that the use of abbreviations and slang, such as those in SMS language, will lead to low literacy and bad spelling among children in the future.

8. Flirting has changed, too. Sexting is the slang for sending “naughty” messages between two phones and has become increasingly popular, especially among teens. 60% of all teens think sexting is dangerous. 20% do it anyway.

9. People have become amazingly adept at this form of communication. In 2005, Sonja Kristiansen of Norway broke the record for the fastest ever text message with the message: “The razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality, they seldom attack a human.” The current record is 37.28 seconds.

10. Texting is the leading cause of tenosynovitis, which is an inflammation in the thumb caused by constant text-messaging. (It’s like tennis elbow but smaller and less sporty.)

Econet seeks $3.1b damages from Bharti Airtel

South Africa-based Econet Wireless is seeking at least $3.1 billion in damages from Bharti Airtel in a dispute over ownership of Airtel Nigeria, according to a suit Econet said it had filed yesterday.

Bharti acquired the African operations of Kuwaiti company Zain in 2010, including 65 per cent of Zain Nigeria, renamed Airtel Nigeria, but a Nigerian court ruled on January 30 that its ownership of the unit was “null and void” because co-founder and 5 per cent shareholder Econet had not been consulted on the transfer.

Econet according to Reuters news claims its stake was unfairly cancelled when Zain took control in 2005, so any decision made since then without it, including the transfer to Bharti from Zain, is void. The Nigerian court upheld that claim.

Bharti, the world’s fifth-biggest mobile phone carrier by subscribers, said on February 8 that its stake in the Nigerian unit was “completely safe” and it had appealed against the verdict.

A Bharti spokesman said the company had not been informed of any lawsuit.

“Econet has yet to put forward its claim for damages to the arbitral tribunal,” he said in a statement emailed to Reuters.

The document Econet said it had filed to court stated: “The claim for damages and equitable compensation against the applicant and some of the respondents might be in excess of $3 billion.”

“The above estimated damages might also be in addition to a claim for $100 million received by the applicant as fees for the management of VNL (Vee Networks Limited, a former name of Airtel) for a period of six years, which sum should have accrued.”

Why we refused telcos mobile money licences – CBN

INDICATIONS emerged last week on why the Central Bank of Nigeria denied telecommunication operators the license to operate mobile money services.

Representative of the apex bank, from the Shares department, Mr. George Sansa who disclosed this during an interview with newsmen at the 64th NCC consumer parliament held in Lagos argued that granting telecommunication service providers license to offer mobile money services might compromise their primary responsibility of providing quality service in the country.

Following this observation, Sansa said CBN chose to limit the role of the telcos to providing traffic for the exercise.

Rigorous process
“The CBN went through a rigorous process in rolling out the guidelines which are of international standard for the scheme. The operators are supposed to be carriers. In order to avoid a clash, telecoms operators were exempted from the grant of operational license. We wanted to avoid a clash of interests,” Sansa said.

On fraud control, Sansa said CBN had before the commencement of the policy, certain stringent guidelines of international standard were set up to strengthen the operation, adding that an e-fraud forum had also been constituted by the apex bank to oversee cases of fraud that maybe perpetrated in Nigeria and in other jurisdictions.

Three Finalists selected in the Nigerian Global Ranger Challenge

Three finalists have been selected in the Nigerian Global Ranger Challenge. The finalists are Moses Nwosa, a 28-year-old resident of Lagos who conceived The Ultimate Challenge; Tolulope Akinboye, a 32-year-old from Ogun (Tolu Omooba Challenge); and Opeyemi Ologun, also 28 and from Lagos (Ranger vs. Omo Forest Reserve).

The Challenge started way back in November last year after the "Ford Focus Challenge". Click here for the blog on the outcome of the "Ford Focus Challenge".

There are two ways to apply. (1) Applicants can submit an application on their behalf and (2) Applicants can be nominated to participate by another party. All Applicants will be asked to submit one of the following items or a combination of the following: Video ("Video"), short essay ("essay") with or without a photo(s) explaining why they should be selected to participate in Ford Motor Company's The Global Ranger Challenge explaining what Challenge they would like to see the Ranger take on which can relate to a task performed on their job, in their community or in and around their town.

Photos of the finalists and a description of their challenges have been posted on the Challenge micro-site. The finalists would be provided with Ford Rangers to carry out their challenges. The Ultimate Challenge (Moses Nwosa) would begin with a 65 km drive to Gurara Falls from Abuja – covering “difficult and almost impossible terrain.” while the Tolu Omooba Challenge would require Ranger to travel between Ibadan and Lagos and manage the workload on a farm. In Ranger versus Omo Forest Reserve, the all-new truck would travel more than two hours to reach the site, then travel the rough, rocky and steep hills from the reserve gate to Erin.

The Ford Regional Sales Manager, Sub-Saharan Africa, Mr. Ezio Tuniz, in a statement declared that “We hope the Ranger Challenge will demonstrate that it can travel whatever road you need it to. “Nigerians depend on their vehicles to do what has to be done, whether it’s at work or transporting their families.”

“The winner – selected by the general public – will be announced in April and will receive a Ford Ranger; April is also when the all-new Ranger officially launches in Nigeria.”

95.8 million subscribers registered 110.4 million SIM cards – NCC

Dr. Eugen Juwah
The ongoing registration of Subscriber Identification Module cards has thrown up a perplexing situation: 110.43 million lines have so far been registered, a whopping 14.54 million more than the official figure of 95,886,714 active mobile lines in the country.

The Executive Vice-Chairman, Nigerian Communications Commission, Dr. Eugene Juwah, disclosed this at an interactive session with newsmen in Abuja on Tuesday.

According to him, this is a clear indication of multiple registrations that must be corrected during the verification process that will soon begin.

He said, “As we speak, we have a combined registration of 110,433,976 of mobile SIM cards that have been registered and the data is going to go through processing and cleaning at the NCC. The registration was variously carried out by the NCC contractors and the network operators.

“We are shortly going to begin verification of the SIMs before a number can be said to be duly registered. With the country’s telephone penetration standing at 95,886,714 lines, there is already clear evidence of multiple registrations. These will be eliminated to create a database of integrity and credibility.

“As the exercise comes to a close, subscribers whose SIM cards are not registered will be deemed not to be interested in the process or that the SIM cards have been abandoned and will be disconnected,” the NCC boss added.

Juwah said the successful registration of SIM cards would logically lead to number portability, which is expected to take off in October.

Number portability, for which the regulatory agency has awarded a contract, is to enable subscribers that are not satisfied with their current service providers to retain their numbers even when they move to other operators.

The NCC boss also disclosed that a new regulation on quality of service had come into effect in order to ensure that telecommunications operators satisfied the yearning of the subscribers for quality services.

Juwah said, “We have laid out comprehensive plans to further excite the communications sector. We have broad plans for broadband deployment to enable us reach the underserved and un-served parts of the country.

“To implement this, we have adopted the open access model as a platform; we are also looking at resuscitating the fixed-line sector by giving out new licences; and in doing this, increase telephony penetration.

Shoprite to open 2 more stores in Nigeria before the end of June 2012 as it reports 19% rise in first half earnings

Shoprite reported that it will be opening 2 new stores in Ilorin and Abuja before the end of June this year. This is part of 12 new stores it intends to open outside South Africa.

Nigeria has the potential to become as big a retail market for South Africa's Shoprite as its home base, the head of the supermarket chain said on Tuesday, playing down concerns of rising poverty in Africa's most populous country.

"Several cities in Nigeria have populations of more than 8 million people. I can't say all of them have the same spending power, but Nigeria can support the same number of supermarkets as South Africa," Shoprite chief executive Whitey Basson told Reuters in an interview.

"Even if you have 60 percent of the population living in poverty, 40 percent of the Nigerian population is still bigger than the South African population."

Shoprite runs about 950 supermarkets with 729 of those in South Africa and two stores in Nigeria.

Cape Town-based Shoprite reported an 18.6 percent rise in first-half headline earnings per share to 280.8 cents, helped by higher prices, a favourable exchange rate and above-inflation wage increases for consumers in its main South African market. Shoprite said sales increased 13.2 percent to 41 billion rand ($5.4 billion) after increasing prices by an average of 4.6 percent and gaining nearly 30 million rand from favourable currency swings.

Junkmail (the acclaimed King of Classifieds from South Africa) opens shop in Nigeria

Just some days ago, we wrote about the Nigerian Classifieds market and how it is becoming an exciting industry. There was one company that was left out which has just started making its presence felt in Nigeria. It is the acclaimed King of Classifieds from South Africa - JunkMail.

On its website, it states that its founder brought the FREE classifieds advert concept to South Africa in 1992 with 4 regional Print titles. It launched the world's first job classified free advert paper, Job Mail in 1997. In 1998, Junk Mail Online became one of the first commercial websites in South Africa. It went live in Kenya in April 2011 and followed up with Job Mail Kenya in May 2011. Even though It launched in Nigeria in November 2011, it has been working below the radar.

Even though it says it was inspired by the surge in the expanding internet access in Nigeria, it definitely will meet with a lot of competition in the likes of Dealfish, Google Trader, Tradestable, Jobberman, Cheki and many more.

Hmm... what will be JunkMail's strategy, I wonder?

First Bank of Nigeria signs MOU with Airtel, Etisalat and Glo to provide mobile money services

First Bank of Nigeria Plc. was not in the initial list of 11 companies given the mobile money license but it is doing its best to catch up with the forerunners having got its license within the last couple of weeks. On Thursday, February 16, it signed separate MOUs with three leading telecommunication companies – Airtel, Glo and Etisalat to provide seamless mobile money services to millions of Nigerians.

Speaking at the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the three telecommunication companies in Lagos, the four companies promised to combine their strengths to provide secure, convenient and user-friendly mobile banking services to the unbanked through the use of mobile phones.

A statement by the bank on Thursday quoted the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Bisi Onasanya, as saying mobile banking was hinged on three planks which were defined in terms of financial inclusion for the unbanked and the underbanked, person to person transaction in terms of sending and receiving money as well as retail payment for the purchase of goods and services.

He added that “With over 600 branches and thousands of business partner outlets in strategic proximity to the people, coupled with over 1,500 Automated Teller Machines including cash deposit ATMs, cardless and biometric ATMs, over five million active accounts and more than 1,200 Point of Sale terminals, FirstBank has always been at the forefront of innovative financial services solutions.”

In addition to the mobile money services, Onasanya said FirstBank had in place a world-class IT infrastructure to drive its e-payment services across transaction touch points.

Early 2012 : The Nigerian Classifieds market already buzzing with new products, new features and new entrants.

Early 2012 and the Classifieds market is already buzzing with new entrants, products and features. No doubt, Dealfish is the "numero uno" in this market with its debut in November 2010, but the new entrants are coming in with products and features to entice the market.

Just this year alone, while Dealfish introduced its much awaited new User Interface with enhanced features, Google Trader has come out with two new features. The first one was Google Trader’s new look on mobile which was launched in January 2012. It has now launched another feature which allows you to be yourself on Google Trader. This new Google Trader feature is about a new way to use Google+ on Google Trader.
Google Trader

When you log into “My Listings” on Google Trader, you can then add some more information about yourself to complete your Trader profile. People will be able to see your real name and photo from Google+, together with your listings, and they’ll be able to visit your profile to find more about you before they contact you. However, using a profile on Trader is completely optional. If you prefer, your listings can remain anonymous on Trader, as they have been in the past.

This new feature reminds me of Facebook Marketplace powered by Oodle marketplace.

Another new feature introduced into the Nigerian market is from Jobberman, the jobs vertical. Jobberman’s
Jobberman Premium Alert

Premium Alerts is an email job alerts service that brings you the latest vacancies that fit only your experience, background, location, and field of study before anyone else, thus increasing your chances of getting a job. PREMIUM helps you be the first to know and apply for latest job opportunities, giving you a higher chance of being selected before everyone else who gets the regular alerts. And it comes to you twice every day once jobs that fit your profile are posted, unlike REGULAR alerts that come to you only twice a week with general jobs. Though nice, this service is not free. You either pay N1500 (approx. $10) per quarter or N3000 (approx. $20) per annum.

I wonder what new feature will be next. What would we expect from Tradestable (Schibsted)?

Or it may be new entrants like PrivatePropertySA or Cheki. PrivateProperty SA snuck into the Nigerian market by of its merger with a local Property classifieds company, Propertiesng.com late last year to create create a new company named PrivateProperty.com.ng. PrivateProperty SA is known to be one of the biggest property classifieds entity in South Africa and it aims to be the number 1 in the Property Vertical classifieds market in Nigeria where there is seemingly no main competitor. Cheki African Media also launched its Nigerian business, Cheki.com.ng late last year after seemingly dominating the Kenyan Cars Vertical Classified market. It hopes to do the same also in Nigeria. Cheki Africa Media is associated with a portfolio of successful online businesses and brands in West and East Africa such as Jobberman, BrighterMonday.

It is truly getting exciting....

Google’s Public DNS service now has Nigerian presence

In December 2009, Google announced the launch of its Google Public DNS , its free global domain name system resolution service, to help make the web faster for everyone.

It’s now the largest public DNS service in the world, according to Google, handling an average of over 70 billion requests a day according to a recent official blog post by Google Public DNS software engineer Jeremy K. Chen.

DNS acts like the phone book of the Internet. If you had to look up hundreds or thousands of phone numbers every day, you’d want a directory that was fast, secure and correct. That’s what Google Public DNS provides for tens of millions of people.

Jeremy continues in the blog post:

“Google Public DNS has become particularly popular for our users internationally. Today, about 70 percent of its traffic comes from outside the U.S. We’ve maintained our strong presence in North America, South America and Europe, and beefed up our presence in Asia. We’ve also added entirely new access points to parts of the world where we previously didn’t have Google Public DNS servers, including Australia, India, Japan and Nigeria.

Shortly after launch, we made a technical proposal for how public DNS services can work better with some kinds of important web hosts (known as content distribution networks, or CDNs) that have servers all of the world. We came up with a way to pass information to CDNs so they can send users to nearby servers. Our proposal, now called “edns-client-subnet,” continues to be discussed by members of the Internet Engineering Task Force. While we work with the IETF, other companies have started experimenting with implementing this proposal.”

Dr Juwah tackles Mobile Payment at the upcoming Telecoms Consumer Parliament

Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and telecommunications subscribers are set to address the inherent challenges the $25 billion mobile money market would pose for Nigerian consumers at the 66th edition of the Telecom Consumer Parliament(TCP) coming up this Friday.

The TCP, a monthly event has been scheduled for 2pm at the Banquet Hall, Excellence Hotel, Ijaiye/Isheri Road, Ogba, Lagos. The event provides telecom consumers the opportunity to meet one on one with their respective service providers to discuss issues or complains bothering on telecom services.

A statement issued by the Head, Media and Public Relations of the Commission, Reuben Muoka, said the Executive Vice Chairman of the Commission, Dr. Eugene Juwah, would be the chief host at the event, while the theme for discussion is: “Mobile Payment: The Consumer Perspective.”

The total value of mobile money transactions in emerging markets is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 54 per cent from $ 25 billion in 2010, to $215 billion in 2015. There is also a forecast that mobile money subscribers would grow from 133 million users in 2010 at a (CAGR) of 40 percent to reach 709 million users in 2015.

Last year, NCC and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) hosted stakeholders to a public forum to brainstorm on a number of solutions on the dichotomy of banked and unbanked consumers. Issues of inter and intra competition between mobile money and network providers, security as well as interoperability were lavishly treated.

Mobile money transfer is conducted using the mobile telephone network and includes the use of handsets, agents and subscribers. It came up as an alternative and fast way of sending money to recipients from the urban to rural areas most especially those without access to bank accounts.

Mobile phones now significantly outnumber ATMs, giving mobile operators a level of reach far greater than money transfer providers and banks. CBN has licensed to 11 companies to operate mobile money transfer in the country, they are: Fortis Mobile Money, UBA/Afripay, GTBank Mobile Money, Pagatech, eTranzact, Monetise, Eartholeum, Paycom, FET, Ecobank and Kudi.

Mobile technology can lower the cost of remittances as it removes the need for physical points of presence and ensures a timely and secured method of transaction. The World Bank estimates that reducing remittance commission charges by 2 to 5 per cent could increase the flow of formal remittances by 50 to 70 per cent, which would boost local economies.

Farmers To Get Fertilisers, Seed Allocation Via Mobile Phones - Minister

ABUJA - Farmers will from now get fertilisers and seed allocation through their mobile phones, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina, has said.

Adesina made this known yesterday in Abuja while fielding questions from newsmen forum, where he said the strategy was couched in the new fertilisers voucher scheme. The minister said the old system whereby government bought and distributed fertilisers was laden with corruption and inefficiency and also led to rent seeking and exploitation of farmers.  He said the new scheme was designed to get seeds and fertilisers to small holder farmers using their phones and biometrics to ensure authenticity.

“Government’s role is always to support farmers; so what we’ve done is that we’ve put in place what we call growth enhancement support.  That basically means that farmers will get subsidised fertilisers and seeds at the rate of 50 per cent of the cost of the seed and the cost of the fertilisers. What is interesting is that we are going to target that to farmers using their cell phones; you will get your fertiliser and seed allocation on your mobile phones. And we have pretty much completed the platform to do that; we will use your biometric, your name, your location, everything. We’ve completed a national data base of our farmers and we are trying to sift out the political farmers from the real farmers. We are doing that so that it’s the genuine farmers that will get the seed and get the fertiliser and that’s the power of technology and we are using that technology.’’

Adesina said the system was designed to ensure transparency and good governance in the distribution of fertilisers and ensure that the fertilisers and seed companies functioned as business entities, not as contract from government. With this system, we can trace if somebody is supplying bad fertiliser, supplying sand instead of fertiliser; we know where it comes from as opposed to the old system. So, I think we’ve taken a tough decision on that; I’m proud of what we are doing, and we are going to enforce it.’’

Adesina also explained that the ministry, in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance and the CBN, had put together a loan guarantee facility to finance the seeds and fertilisers companies.

Glo partners Nigeria police to combat crime

Telecoms provider, Globacom, has entered a partnership with the Nigeria Police to provide seamless and effective telephone connection to officers and men of the force, geared at enhancing their crime fighting capabilities.

This project entitled, FORCECOM 700, will see Globacom providing an initial 10,000 connections on a Close User Group (CUG) platform covering the entire force nationally.

The CUG provides for members of the group to call one another free of charge, while paying minimally for calls out side the CUG. The facility will also be extended to family members of the policemen.

During the signing of the agreement recently at the Mike Adenuga Towers headquarters of Globacom, the Head of the Public Sector Department of Globacom, Mr. Tunde Amunikoro explained that the project was painstakingly designed to make life easier for families of policemen across the country.

“We have considered the rate at which officers of the Nigeria Police are transferred round the country leaving their families behind at various commands. This scheme will certainly reduce the gap of communication while on such postings,” he said.

Throwing more light on the quality of the package, Amunikoro said that Glo had built excess capacity to accommodate the communication demands of the force and had injected several soft and highly competitive conditions into this scheme to reduce the effect of the subsidy removal and improve the wellbeing the men of the Nigerian Police Force and their families.

Samsung Series 9 Review

Here is a review from a Guest Writer, Segun Olojo-Kosoko who agreed to review the new Samsung Series 9. This is in continuation of the earlier blog on the launch of this same gadget in the Nigerian market recently. Segun is an avid Technology enthusiast who knows and has worked in Nigeria. He currently resides in the United Kingdom.

Enjoy

I am not a fan of Samsung when it comes to either laptops, tablets or mobile devices save for electronics. But when I was asked to do a review on the new Samsung tablet PC, I took this as an opportunity.

Looking into the world of gadget and electronic devices, Samsung is definitely not a small player as they have being around for a very long time I would say. Samsung had a great 2010, producing a series of highly impressive machines. But it got a little left behind in the ultraportable stakes. Here to rectify this, is the long-awaited Samsung 900XSA review - otherwise known as the Samsung 9 Series. Boasting a gorgeous design and excellent power courtesy of an Intel Sandy Bridge Core i5 processor, portability is king here.
Its Powered by the Intel® Core™ i5-2537M Processor and running the Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium operating system, the Samsung Series 9 13.3" Laptop is fast, efficient, and absolutely stunning. This lightweight laptop packs a 128GB SSD instead of a hard drive, and also boasts 4GB of RAM.

The Samsung Series 9 13.3" Laptop is fashioned from Duralumin, a material more commonly used in the aerospace industry. Twice as strong as common aluminium alloys, yet almost as lightweight, Duralumin's properties enabled Samsung engineers to create a 1.35 kg wonder machine just 16.3 mm thick!

MTN seeks Nigerian government protection over MEND threat

A mobile telecoms operator, MTN Nigeria, is taking the threat to attack South African investments in Nigeria by the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta seriously as it has asked the Federal Government to help its operations and facilities.

MEND had said it aimed to “inflict pain” on the telecoms operator and the South African petroleum company, SacOil, over what it claimed was President Jacob Zuma’s interference in its “legitimate fight for justice” in the Niger Delta region.

The group had previously been linked to attacks on oil companies’ operations in Nigeria. It is one of the largest militant groups in the Niger Delta and aims to expose what it says is the exploitation of workers in the region and the damage inflicted on the environment by the government and oil companies.

“To the South African government, we accept your challenge and will show you how easy it is to drive your investments out of our region,” the spokesman of MEND, Jomo Gbomo, said in a statement.”

MTN has invested $5bn in its operations in Nigeria and it is the country’s fourth telecoms company, alongside Globacom, Airtel and Etisalat.

In a statement on Wednesday by the General Manager, Corporate Communications, MTN Nigeria, Mrs. Funmi Omogbenigun, the company said, “Matters related to national security are the responsibility of the government and we trust that this threat, like others, will be given the necessary attention by government.”
