Interesting statistics about the Internet in 2012: 2.2 billion email users, 634 million websites

During the course of the year, there were a lot of milestones achieved on the Internet and all these answers are available on the Internet. Now Royal Pingdom has tried to capture everything in a blog post on its site.

For instance, do you know how many websites were added globally in 2012? How many internet users are there globally? When did Facebook achieve the 1 billion active user mark?

We reported some of these stats on this site when they were achieved like when Facebook achieved the 1 billion active user mark in October and when Twitter crossed the 200 million user mark in December.

Other highlights include 144 billion as the total email traffic per day worldwide; 425 million active Gmail users globally, making it the leading email provider worldwide; and 634 million websites globally as at end of December.

We have 2.4 billion Internet users worldwide, 1.1 billion global smartphone subscribers and there were 1.2 trillion searches on Google in 2012

On the Social Media front, in 2012 there were 2.7 billion likes on Facebook every day, 175 million tweets were sent on Twitter every day, while Google's +1 button was used a whopping 5 billion times per day.
