Wikipedia Owners set to launch a travel site - Wikivoyage on the 15th of January 2013

Wikimedia Foundation, the company that brought you Wikipedia, is set to launch a travel site called Wikivoyage. According to Skift, the launch date is set for the 15th of January 2013.

As you may already know, Wikimedia is a global movement whose mission is to bring free educational content to the world. Through various projects, chapters, and the support structure of the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation, Wikimedia strives to bring about a world in which every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge.

So it is expected that Wikivoyage would adhere to Wikipedia's no-advertising business model.

Wikivoyage is a free web-based travel guide for both travel destinations and travel topics written by volunteer authors. The project was started as a fork of the German version of Wikitravel in September 2006 with the specific intention of avoiding commercial interests after Wikitravel was acquired by the for-profit company Internet Brands.

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales appeared on The Colbert Report yesterday and confirmed that the site would be launching "soon." Wales told the show's host that the site does not have a business model and will not have any advertising -- as is the case for all sites run by the Wikimedia Foundation.
